Prehab – and Rehabilitation

Our goal is to optimize your physical function, health outcomes, and restoring your highest level of functioning before and after injury, illness, surgery or other conditions.

Prehabilitation:

Often abbreviated as “pre-hab” refers to a proactive approach that involves preparing you physically and mentally to optimize your health, fitness, and functional status before you undergo a medical intervention or face a health challenge. It involves a combination of exercise, education, and other interventions tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.

Rehabilitation

    Rehabilitation focuses on restoring and maximizing physical function, mobility, and quality of life in individuals after injury, illness, or disability. At EPR we highly support a multidisciplinary approach involving other physical therapists and healthcare professionals as well as family members in order to develop comprehensive treatment plans and facilitate optimal outcomes.
  • Our Aim is promote recovery, prevent complications such as muscle weakness and joint stiffness, reduce pain, and help you regain independence in activities of daily living.
  • Programs are tailored to the specific needs and goals of each person and may include safe and effective exercises, hands-on therapy, assistive devices, and other modalities to improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and functional abilities.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Both the prehab and rehabilitation process begin with a comprehensive assessment of your health status, medical history, physical fitness, and functional abilities.
  • We conduct evaluations to identify areas of strength and weakness and assess your readiness for treatment, identifying the appropriate stage of intervention.

Exercise and Physical Activity

  • Exercise prescription is a cornerstone of pre- and rehabilitation programs. Based on your individual needs and abilities your program is designed to improve muscular strength, flexibility, mobility, fitness. endurance and balance.
  • Exercises are tailored to target specific muscle groups or functional movements relating to your upcoming surgery or procedure or post thereof.
  • The ultimate goal is to enhance your physical resilience, quality of movement, reduce the risk of postoperative complications, and facilitate a faster and smooth recovery process.

Education and Psychosocial Support

  • We include educational components to empower you with knowledge about your upcoming medical procedures, rehabilitation expectations, and self-care strategies.
  • Psychosocial support may be recommended to address any fears, anxieties, or concerns related to your treatment or issues. Counselling, mindfulness techniques, and peer support groups are examples of interventions which can assist promoting emotional well-being. The body and mind are an interactive whole, impacting one another both ways.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Modification

  • Often are part of the prehab – rehab process and need to be addressed and potentially modified in order to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • We encourage to seek guidance on dietary strategies to promote healing and support immune function by consuming nutrient-rich foods.
  • Lifestyle modifications, such as smoking cessation, stress management and optimizing sleep habits, may also be emphasized as part of the pre- and rehabilitation process to enhance overall health and well-being.

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • At EPR we monitor your progress and adjust the prehab- and/or rehabilitation program as needed.
  • Regular follow-up appointments allow for ongoing evaluation, reassessment of goals, and modification of interventions to ensure optimal preparation and outcomes of your short- and long term goals and needs. The number and duration of supervised sessions varies from person to person. Ultimately we aim to progress from supervised exercise session to reduced supervision e.g. group classes or independent return to your preferred activity or sport.
